To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what steps have been taken to improve morale in the Health and Safety Executive.

Mr. Nicholls

While the Director General of the Health and Safety Executive accepts that there are some problems arising from the pay and promotion prospects of certain groups of staff, he does not take the view that there is anything generally wrong with morale in the executive.
