§ Mr. Ron DaviesTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) how many mink farms currently operate in England; and what was the figure 12 months ago;
(2) if he will give details of the licensing arrangements necessary for the establishment and operation of a mink farm;
(3) how many licences are current for the operation of mink farms in England.
§ Mr. Donald ThompsonAs at 24 March there were 48 licences for the farming of mink in force in England. These licences covered 49 farms. One of these farms has ceased to keep mink and the licence expires this month. A year ago the number of farms licensed was 44.
Under the Destructive Imported Animals Act 1932 and The Mink (Keeping) Order 1987, the appropriate Department may at its discretion issue a licence for the keeping of mink except in certain areas of Great Britain specified in the Order. The fee, currently £115, and the manner in which mink are to be confined are specified in The Mink (Keeping) Regulations 1975 as amended by The Mink (Keeping) (Amendments) Regulations of both 1982 and 1987. Before a licence is issued the premises are inspected and an assessment made of the likely impact on farming and wildlife if mink were to escape from captivity.
