To ask the Minister of Agriculture. Fisheries and Food if he will take steps to ensure that no meat or poultry, in the production of which hormones have been used, is made available for sale to the British consumer without bearing a clear label indicating the fact.

My hon. Friend may be aware that the use of hormone growth promoters for fattening purposes has been prohibited in the United Kingdom since 1 December 1986.

In the light of this I do not believe that the labelling of meat or poultry would provide any further safeguard for consumers.
