HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 c664W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the total number of applications received for British citizenship by(a) adults and (b) children in each of the last five calendar years; and in each category how many were granted.

Mr. Renton

The number of applications received in caseworking groups in the years 1983–1986 is shown in the table.

Adults Minors
1983 70,416 9,433
1984 33,857 8,136
1985 41,905 10,666
1986 45,885 11,598

We estimate that about 290,000 applications were received in 1987.

Figures for grants of citizenship in 1983 to 1986 were published in table 2 of Home Office statistical bulletin "Citizenship Statistics, United Kingdom 1986" (Issue 29/87). Provisional figures for 1987 indicate that grants of citizenship were made to 55,600 adults and 9,200 minors. Final figures for 1987 will be published later this year.
