HC Deb 16 March 1988 vol 129 cc608-9W
Mr. David Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress has been made on bringing beaches in East Anglia into line with European Economic Community standards; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

In the Anglian water authority area, 28 waters are identified as within the scope of the bathing water directive (76/160/EEC). Twenty of these waters met the directive's standards in 1986, and provisional results for 1987 suggest that 22 now meet these standards. Major improvement schemes are under way at Great Yarmouth, Heacham and Cromer, and Anglian water authority plans to spend some £18 million over the next four years on schemes related to the improvement of bathing waters.
