24. Mr. Soames

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many places he expects to be available at city technology colleges; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

It is envisaged that each city technology college will provide between 750 and 1,200 places depending on the local circumstances. It is not possible to give a precise figure for the overall number of places which will be available but the target is to establish 20 such colleges.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the progress to date in the setting up of city technology colleges.

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Leeds, Central (Mr. Fatchett) on 1 February at column442 Since then my right hon. Friend has announced plans for a CTC in Middlesbrough.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many local education authorities have now shown an interest in the establishment of city technology colleges.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what further plans he has for introducing additional city technology colleges in parts of the United Kingdom not yet earmarked for such a college.

Mrs. Rumbold

The list of possible locations for city technology colleges in the booklet, "A New Choice of School" was not definitive and my right hon. Friend will consider proposals to establish CTCs in other locations. The Government's first objective is to establish CTCs in England. It is for my right hon. Friends to decide if and when the programme should be extended elsewhere to other parts of the United Kingdom.
