What was the average cost of (a) an attendance centre order, and (b) a place in a probation hostel in the financial years 1985–86, 1986–87 and 1987–88 respectively.

The average cost of giving effect to an attendance centre order is estimated to have been about £82 in the financial year 1985–86 and about £108 in 1986–87. The annual cost of accommodating a person, net of residents' contributions, in a probation hostel in England and Wales was £7,666 in 1985–86; the estimated cost for 1986–87 is £8,095. Figures for 1987–88 are not yet available.
