§ Mr. Raison
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how the share of local authority expenditure taken by education has changed since the passing of the Local Government Act 1958.
§ Mrs. Rumbold
In 1958, education's share of total authority spending in the United Kingdom was 41.4 per cent. In 1986, it was 41.8 per cent. The comparison is based on calendar year figures representing recurrent and capital spending excluding debt interest and an imputed charge for capital consumption.
