To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what amounts of resources his Department plans to provide to train social workers in investigating suspected cases of non-accidental injury.

Mr. Newton

The Department makes grants available to Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work which has within its programme work to develop child care training. We have also set up a centrally funded interdisciplinary training initiative as announced on 30 October 1986 and 8 April 1987 at a cost of £500,000. Several of the six projects so far established will be of benefit to social workers. Other projects are under consideration.
