To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has on total annual attendance figures in the following sports(a) football, (b) cricket, (c) athletics, (d) swimming, (e) speedway, (f) ice-hockey and (g) motor-racing.

Mr. Moynihan

Information held by the relevent governing bodies shows the following attendance at sporting events:

  1. (i) Football: League matches and the four major Cup competitions in 1986–87—21.4 million.
  2. (ii) Cricket First class matches in 1986—0.82 million.
  3. (iii) Athletics: The 18 televised events—0.11 million.
  4. (iv) Ice Hockey: Premier and 1st divisions, Autumn cup and Wembley Championships—0.59 million.

Attendance figures for swimming, speedway and motor racing events are not collected centrally.
