HC Deb 02 March 1988 vol 128 cc579-80W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish a table showing the level of outstanding maintenance work from 1979 to the latest date for which data are available.

Mr. Chope

Estimates of the cost of outstanding high priority maintenance work on Government Department's civil accommodation have been made only since 1984. For work within the responsibility of the Property Services Agency, the figures are:

£million
1985 96
1986 103
1987 103

All estimates are at September 1987 prices. The 1987 assessment of £103 million reflects the transfer of some delegated works responsibilities from PSA to Departments under the property repayment services system.

Substantial additional provision for civil maintenance was announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in last year's Autumn Statement, and by the Secretary of State for the Environment in the Official Report, at columns 664–66, on 3 November 1987. The provision for maintenance has been increased to 105 million in 1988–89 and £120 million in the following two years.

Maintenance programmes on the Defence estate are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence.
