HC Deb 02 March 1988 vol 128 cc590-1W
44. Mr. Flannery

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on progress towards a settlement of the outstanding conflicts in Central America.

Mr. Eggar

We urge all the Central Americans to fulfil all their outstanding obligations under the Guatemala accord immediately, especially those relating to democratisation.

51. Mr. Ingram

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to visit Nicaragua to discuss the political situation in Central America.

Mr. Eggar

My right hon. and learned Friend has no current plans to visit Nicaragua. Her Majesty's embassies in Central America monitor the political situation in the region closely. I discussed the situation in Central America with EC/Central America/Contadora representatives at the meeting in Hamburg 29 February-1 March (San Jose IV).

Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy towards Arias' peace proposals for Central America in the light of the recent initiatives taken by the Nicaraguan Government.

Mr. Eggar

We fully support the Guatemala agreement which aims to achieve a peaceful, negotiated solution to the problems of Central America. We urge the Nicaraguan Government to fulfil without delay the commitments made at the Central American Presidents' summit on 15 January, and to comply with the obligation in the Guatemala accord to introduce full democratic freedoms.
