HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 c450W
Mr. Speller

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he made of the cost of providing motor cycle leg guards when considering his policy towards their future fitting on motor cycles.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

It might range between 3 and 10 per cent. of the cost of a new motor cycle. Cost and benefits are always taken into account in considering safety specifications to cut deaths and injuries. In the case of leg guards the cost would vary according to the type of motor cycle, its equipment, the manufacturer's design and production methods.
