To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what monitoring takes place of the radioactive nitrogen oxide gases released from the B 268 medium active evaporation and uranium finishing plant at British Nuclear Fuels Ltd., Sellafield.

British Nuclear Fuels plc is required to monitor radioactive gaseous discharges from the Sellafield site as a condition of the certificate of authorisation issued by my Department and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food under the Radioactive Substances Act 1960. The radioactive content of the nitrogen oxide gases discharged from B 268 is monitored for alpha and beta, plutonium alpha, americium and curium radioactivity.
