HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 c277W
Miss Lestor

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what moneys are being made available for the training of social workers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

The Department's contribution to funding for social work training is about £20 million in this financial year. This sum includes £7 million to grant-aid the new £10 million training support programme for local authority social services staff working with elderly people, and about £11.6 million to the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work. The latter figure includes £7.6 million for direct student support and up to £1 million for improvements to present training arrangements.
