HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c516W
Mr. Michael J. Martin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps are being taken to clean up the beaches on the south-west coast of Scotland.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Responsibility for the cleanliness of beaches rests with the district or islands council concerned, while monitoring the quality of bathing waters is the responsibility of the river purification authorities. If, however, the hon. Member has a particular problem in mind he may like to write to me about it.
