§ Mr. BaldryTo ask the Secretary of State for Health whether the Government will reaffirm their support for the principles and aims of the London declaration on AIDS prevention.
§ Mrs. CurrieThe Government fully support the aims, objectives and principles set out in the London declaration, which was adopted by representatives of 148 states at the world summit of Health Ministers held in London in January 1988. The declaration emphasises information and education, aimed both at the general public and specific groups, as the most important component of national prevention strategies, and stresses the need to avoid discrimination against HIV-infected people and people with AIDS. These principles underlie the strategy that we have developed for fighting the spread of AIDS within the United Kingdom. The Government also have a firm commitment to playing a full part in the worldwide effort against AIDS and support the central role of the World Health Organisation in directing and co-ordinating that effort.
