Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what requests he has made to the transport users consultative committees for Yorkshire and the north-west regarding public hearings into any hardship caused by the closure of the Settle to Carlisle section of British Rail; and if he will make a statement,

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has requested a supplementary report from the transport users consultative committees for north-eastern and north-western England under section 56(10) of the Transport Act 1962 to notify him of any changes in the use of the line which would lead them to modify their advice. It is for the committees to decide their own procedure for undertaking this task.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to what mileage of rail on the Settle to Carlisle section of British Rail is continuously welded flat-bottomed rail, as to its current value and as to what would be the replacement cost of either flat-bottomed or bull-head track of equivalent weight; and if he will make a statement.
