60. Dr. Reid

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proposals have been received from the United States Administration for Upper Heyford and Lakenheath to be used as bases for US F111 aircraft armed with air launched cruise missiles.

76. Ms. Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proposals have been received from the United States Administration for Upper Heyford and Lakenheath to be used as bases for US F111 aircraft armed with air-launched cruise missiles.

Mr. Younger

No proposals have been received from the United States Administration. The redeployment to Europe of dual capable aircraft currently based in the United States is one force restructuring option currently under consideration within NATO, but no decisions on this or any other option have yet been taken. There would in any case be no question of the redeployed aircraft being armed with strategic air-launched cruise missiles (ALCMs).

28. Mr. McFall

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the role in current North Atlantic Treaty Organisation strategy of long-range sea-launched cruise missiles; and what changes in the role are currently being considered.

40. Mr. Madden

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the role in current North Atlantic Treaty Organisation strategy of long-range sea-launched cruise missiles; and what changes in the role are currently being considered.

72. Ms. Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the role in current North Atlantic Treaty Organisation strategy of long-range sea-launched cruise missiles; and what changes in this role are currently being considered.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Sea-launched cruise missiles (SLCMs), which the United States navy has been deploying since 1984, provide a flexible and survivable addition to the US sea-based nuclear deterrent. Their specific role is to hold at risk fixed targets on land. SLCMs are not formally assigned to NATO.

41. Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what recent discussions he has had with his United States counterpart about the possibility of F111s stationed in the United Kingdom carrying air-launched cruise missiles.

66. Mr. Litherland

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what recent discussions he has had with his United States counterpart about the possibility of F111s stationed in the United Kingdom carrying air-launched cruise missiles.

Mr. Younger

I refer the hon. Members to the answer I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Sunderland, South (Mr. Mullin).
