§ Mr. Tom Clarke
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what monitoring of the ethnic background of prison officers takes place in prisons in England and Wales; and what information he has available on the ethnic backgrounds of prison officers.
§ Mr. Douglas Hogg
In a series of regional surveys all Home Office staff, including prison officers, were recently invited to complete a questionnaire. A total of 0.6 per cent. of those in prison service unified grades VI to VIII who responded stated that they were of ethnic minority origin. A further questionnaire is being sent to all those who did not respond.
