To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the ratios of(a) governor and prison officer grades, and (b) other civilian grades, per inmate; what were the equivalent figures 10 years ago; and what corresponding information he has for equivalent services in other European Community countries.

On 1 January 1988 the ratios were(a) 1:2.27 and (b) 1:5.49 taking into account all prison service staff including those at headquarters and regional offices. The equivalent figures on 1 January 1978 were (a) 1:2.50 and (b)1:6.74. We have no corresponding information for equivalent services in other European Community countries.
