HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 cc751-2W
34. Mr. Favell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent representations he has received on the introduction of a British identity card.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have received a steady flow of correspondence and comments from right hon. and hon. Members and the public on the introduction of national identity cards. We shall continue to consider the views which are put to us on this matter, but, at present, we remain to be persuaded that there is a sufficiently strong case for reintroducing compulsory identity cards.
