Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total spending by his Department on press, public relations and advertising, respectively, in 1987–88.

Mr. Hurd

In 1987–88 the full cost of staff and other costs of Home Office press office was £525,000; for Home Office publicity section the cost was £306,000; the cost of advertising was £4,837,000.

Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1988–89 by his Department on(a) TV advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material.

It is estimated that Home Office spending during 1988–89 will be as follows:
