HC Deb 12 July 1988 vol 137 cc150-1W
25. Sir Bernard Braine

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what recent improvements have been made in services for diabetics.

Mrs. Currie

Diabetics, like others, have benefited from new techniques employed in the National Health Service; early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy followed by laser treatment may prevent blindness; increasing number of those with end stage renal failure are accepted for renal replacement therapy. As part of the development of services in the community disposable syringes and needles were made available from general practitioners in September 1987; blood glucose strips became similarly available on 1 June this year.
