§ Mr. Alfred MorrisTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport if his Department has been monitoring the published evidence given to the Transport Committee on air safety; whether he was aware before the Committee's inquiry of the delays in realising the 52 movements per hour throughput at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports, assumed by the inspector of the Stansted/Heathrow planning inquiries to be achieved in 1992; and if he will now instruct the Civil Aviation Authority to undertake to publish an evaluation of the airspace implications of difficult capacity options in London.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyMy right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has naturally followed with interest the evidence presented to the Select Committee, including the memorandum submitted from the Civil Aviation Authority in CAP 537. My right hon. Friend last week commissioned from the CAA a wide review of the requirement for airport capacity up to 2005, with separate advice on strategies to make good use of the available airspace in the London area in the nearer term. The inspector at the airports inquiries stated that the accommodation of Stansted alongside Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports would require substantial reorganisation of airspace in the London area, concluding that such reorganisation could be achieved.
