To ask the Minister for the Arts what have been the total development costs to date of the noise reduction system for the national sound archives; and what is the remit of this development.

Mr. Luce

The CEDAR system at the British Library's national sound archive has cost £40,000. The remit for this development was to obtain the best possible system for preserving the sound content of the collections, and to achieve successful commercial sales of similar equipment for the financial benefit of the archive and the British Library.
