To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make additional funding available to the Northern Ireland educational boards to enable them to tackle the backlog of repairs to school buildings.

In December I announced that I was allocating £250 million for the recurrent expenditure, including maintenance of buildings, of the five education and library boards for the next financial year. This represents an overall increase of 5 per cent. over estimated expenditure for this year. I have also recently announced that I will provide an additional £0.5 million for the current financial year to supplement the boards' schools buildings maintenance budgets.
