Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the membership of the group making merit awards for the Liverpool and Wirral district health authorities.

Mr. Newton

Distinction awards are granted by the Secretary of State on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards whose members are listed in the table. The ACDA is advised by two local award committees in each region, depending on the level of award. The names of the members of the current committees for the Mersey region, which includes both Liverpool and Wirral health authority are also listed.

Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidance is given to the committee operating the merit award system; and if he will place copies of any relevant documents in the Library.

Mr. Newton

There is no formal guidance issued to the Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards, the committee which recommends the allocation of awards to consultants. The ACDA receives advice from local awards committees and issues guidance to it each year outlining their duties. A copy of the ACDA's current guidance has been placed in the Library.

Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list by name each consultant in(a) Liverpool district health authority and (b) Wirral district health authority who has been given a merit award; and if he will state when each award was made of what grade and what value, the specialisation of each person who has an award and amount of time each such person is contracted to work for the National Health Service.

No. The names of award holders are confidential, subject only to their being available in confidence to consultants generally within their region on request to the regional medical officer.

Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he intends to review the National Health Service consultants' merit award system.

Mr. Newton

We have no present plans to do so.
