Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what was the percentage change in the number of day cases in the North West regional health authority between 1978 and the latest available year;

(2) by how many National Health Service waiting lists have changed in percentage terms between 1979 and 1986 in (a) the North West region and (b) England;

(3) how many patients were treated in the National Health Service in Great Britain in 1986 as (a) out-patients, (b) in-patients and (c) day cases.

Between 1978 and 1986 the number of day cases treated in North Western regional health authority increased by 84.4 per cent. from 68,080 to 125,564. Some of the other requested information is given in the table. Statistics for the rest of Great Britain are a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
