HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 c2W
38. Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, in the light of his recent visit, he has any plans to alter the size or composition of the British aid programme to India.

Mr. Chris Patten

I was most impressed with the quality of the projects I visited in India. The overall size of the programme, which is rightly by far our largest, will continue to be determined by what we can afford and by the proposals put to us by the Government of India.

The balance between our aid to infrastructure, including energy, and to natural resources, health, education and water is about right. I hope to be able over the next few months to announce further projects in the fields of education, urban development and rural water supplies.
