Mr. Gow

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was(a) the expenditure per pupil and (b) the average size of classes in (i) infant, (ii) primary and (iii) secondary schools in (1) England, (2) East Sussex and (3) the borough of Eastbourne on the available date closest to 3 May 1979; and what are the equivalent figures for the latest available date, adjusted in the case of expenditure for inflation.

3 The analyses are in respect of classes taught by one teacher in a specified period on the day of the census count in January each year and may not be representative of the pattern of classes over the academic year as a whole.
