§ Mr. ScottI am pleased to announce the award of a grant of £28,500 for 1987–88 and £30,500 for 1988–89 to the Royal National Institute for the Deaf to assist with the running costs of its telephone exchange for the deaf (TED).
This grant is being given in response to the RNID's request for assistance under the Government's concerned technology programme. Assistance has also been made available by the Department of Trade and Industry, the Manpower Services Commission and British Telecom.
We recognise that a vital need of all deaf and heating impaired people is to be able to communicate with hearing people. TED is a worldwide leader in solving this problem for many deaf people. We have decided to make a contribution to its running costs for this limited period so that long-term arrangements for providing this service can be worked out.
