Sir John FarrTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will seek powers to enable him to obstruct the plans of some local education authorities which, despite the Education Act 1986, seek to prevent the wearing of school uniforms in schools which have freely opted so to do.
§ Mr. DunnMy right hon. Friend has no plans to seek such powers. His own views, as expressed in circular 7/87 from his Department, is that the wearing of school uniform contributes significantly to the ethos of the school and the decision should normally rest with the governing body.
