HC Deb 12 February 1988 vol 127 c409W
Mr. Churchill

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are the criteria a roadway has to meet to acquire an M designation.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Motorways, designated M, are special roads whose use is restricted to certain classes of motor traffic.

The decision to build or improve a road as a motorway takes into account the level and nature of traffic and the function and location of the road.
