To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has to tackle the shortage of nurses employed by Barnet health authority.

We have announced a range of measures on accommodation, grading structure and training designed to improve recruitment and retention of nurses in the NHS. However, it is for individual health authorities to consider what action to take to deal with local shortages. Should the hon. Member wish to pursue the matter further, he may wish to contact the chairman of the Barnet health authority direct.
