To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what level of entirely new resources will be devoted to the new programme for training unemployed people.

Mr. Cope

Government funds for the new programme will total some £1.4 billion—the current provision for the programme it will replace. In addition, it is expected that employers will contribute towards the training costs of trainees engaged in practical training on their premises. It is estimated that these contributions will total about £150 million.
