To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the progress of the extension of the technical and vocational education initiative.

Since the TVEI extension programme began in September 1987, nearly 70 education authorities in England, Wales and Scotland have started a preparatory or extension scheme; and nearly 40 more have applied to participate from September 1989. I am glad to say that every authority in Britain now has a TVEI pilot, preparatory or extension scheme.
