To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what progress has been made towards a response to the advice of the Advisory Board for the Research Councils, "A Strategy for the Science Base", and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend is taking account of the ABRC's strategy advice in the continuing development of detailed policies for the science base. These will be substantially underpinned by the £306 million increase in the science budget over the next three years which my right hon. Friend announced on 1 November at column605.
