HC Deb 14 December 1988 vol 143 cc572-3W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many science teachers there are at present in schools; and how many of these are fully qualified for this subject.

Mr. Butcher

Estimates of the number of teachers of science subjects, with and without a science qualification, available from the 1984 secondary school staffing survey of maintained schools in England are as follows:

1 Teachers with a post A-level qualification in "general or combined science" and in "other sciences" exclude those with qualifications specifically in biology, chemistry or physics.

A further secondary school staffing survey was conducted in 1988. The results of this are expected to be available shortly.
