To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has held any recent discussions with the Nursery Nurses Examination Board about career structure for nursery nurses; and if he will make a statement.

No. My right hon. Friend has no powers governing the career structure of nursery nurses. The career development of nursery nurses working in the public sector is the responsibility of their local government employers, but less than one third of those qualifying annually are initially employed in this way.
