To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what proportion of the United Kingdom fishing fleet the Welsh fleet represents; and what are the corresponding figures for each year since 1968.

In 1986, fishing vessels over 40 ft in length operating from Wales amounted to 2.7 per cent. of the United Kingdom total. During the period 1968 to 1985 the figure varied between 1.9 per cent. and 3 per cent. of the United Kingdom total. Comprehensive data on vessels under 40 ft are not readily available.
