Mr. Peter Bottomley

Fostering and improving transport safety is one of the objectives of the Department and is of concern to all staff. Some groups with particular responsibilities for supervision and enforcement are:

Number
Railways inspectorate 37
Surveyor generals organisation 407
HM Coastguard 569
Driver testing and training 1,715
Road safety policy and vehicle standards and engineering 92
Vehicle inspectorate 1,550
Vehicle components approval 70
Air accidents investigation branch 41

Many of the 628 staff at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory are directly engaged on safety improvement research, and a major part of the work of the 5,401 staff at DVLC is concerned with documentation required for road safety purposes.
