§ Lord Jenkins of Putneyasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers will be sheltered in government bunkers 408WA in the event of nuclear war; whether provision will be made for Mr. Thatcher and Ministers' spouses and for the Shadow Cabinet and whether any children will have to be left outside; and what is the breakdown of the staff costs of the new London bunkers estimated at £1,691,880.
The Earl of CaithnessProtected accommodation would be available in wartime for certain Ministers and officials, but it would not be in the interests of national security to give details.
The figure of £1,691,880 does not relate solely to the staff costs of proposed emergency centres to be provided by the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority for the purpose of carrying out its statutory emergency planning duties. It is the authority's forecast of the staffing cost of all its emergency planning activities for 1990–1991. The authority's proposals are still being considered by the Home Office.
