HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 cc94-5W
Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total number of people unemployed in the Greenock and Port Glasgow constituency, by sex, who are (a) under 25 years of age, (b) 25 to 35 years, (c) 35 to 50 years and (d) over 50 years; and what were the numbers in 1985 and 1986.

Mr. Ian Lang

The information is as follows:

(a) Scotland, (b) Ayrshire and (c) Kilmarnock and Loudoun and compare this with (i) the 1979 figures and percentage and (ii) the 1983 figures and percentage.

Mr. Lang

The information is not available in the precise form requested. However, unemployment figures and rates for the Kilmarnock travel-to-work area—which since 1983 are the same as for the parliamentary constituency of Kilmarnock and Loudoun—together with the comparable figures for Scotland are shown in the table.

Year (September) Kilmarnock travel-to-work area Scotland
Number per cent. Number per cent.
1979 3,277 9.5 163,585 7.2
1983 5,465 17.6 339,992 15.3
1987 5,374 17.1 332,684 14.8

The figures for the different years are not comparable due to changes in the method of the count.

This information is available in the Library.

Mr. Robert Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in the Official Report all industrial and commercial redundancies which amount to 25 or more in (a) the constituency of North Aberdeen and (b) Aberdeen for each year since 1979.

Mr. Lang

The information requested cannot be provided since details of closures and redundancies confirmed by individual companies are provided to the Manpower Services Commission in confidence.

Mr. Galbraith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list all closures that have resulted in 25 or more redundancies in the Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituency in each year since 1979.

Mr. Lang

The information requested cannot be provided since details of closures and redundancies confirmed by individual companies are provided to the Manpower Services Commission in confidence.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list for each employment office and ward district the numbers unemployed in the latest month for which figures are available.

Mr. Lang

The number of unemployed claimants for each Jobcentre and in each local authority district ward in Scotland cannot be provided except at a disproportionate cost.

Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many young people under 25 years of age were unemployed in the Greenock travel-to-work area and Strathclyde region; and of these how many have been unemployed for more than one year, two years, three years and four years.

Mr. Lang

On 9 July 1987, the latest date for which information is available, the numbers of unemployed claimants under 25 years of age in the Greenock travel-to-work area and Strathclyde regional authority by duration were as shown in the table.

Duration unemployed Greenock travel-to-work area Number of unemployed claimants Strathclyde regional authority Number of unemployed claimants
Up to 1 year 2,014 47,564
1 to 2 years 552 11,240
