HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 c738W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has for United Kingdom participation in the United Nations International Literacy Year in 1990.

Mr. Dunn

The Government are taking vigorous steps to counter illiteracy in this country through improving standards in schools, through Manpower Services Commission programmes and through the efforts of the adult literacy and basic skills unit. How the proposed International Literacy Year should be marked in 1990 will be considered later in the light of the success of these efforts.
