HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 c812W
Mr. Fayell

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will introduce legislation to privatise the Post Office; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butcher

No. It is the Government's view that there are significant benefits to be gained in transferring activities from the public to the private sector. Nevertheless, we have made it clear that because of its special character we have no intention of privatising the Royal Mail; but we do not rule out other parts of the Post Office as possible candidates where privatisation is practicable and makes commercial sense, though we have not yet come to any conclusions.
