53. Mr. Patrick McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the effects of the conflict between Iraq and Iran.

We remain deeply concerned about the continuation of this appalling conflict, the associated danger to shipping in the Gulf and the destabilising effect it is having on the whole region. We are active within the United Nations and bilaterally to try to reduce the level of tension, and to obtain implementation of SCR 598 leading to a peaceful settlement.
