To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the establishments of the police forces in Scotland; and whether any of them are operating below establishment.

The position as at 30 September 1987 was as follows:

Note: Actual strength figures include officers on national training courses, on central service, and with the Scottish crime squad.

All forces, with the exception of Strathclyde police, are operating at or close to authorised establishment. Fife constabulary is in the process of implementing an increase in authorised establishment agreed earlier this year.
