§ Mr. David MarshallTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to promote road safety in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonMy right hon. and learned Friend is concerned about Scotland's poor road accident record. He has therefore taken a number of steps aimed at reducing casualty levels. These include the extension for a further two years of the Scottish road safety campaign, which was initially set up to organise Scotland's contribution to European Road Safety Year in 1986. The campaign committee has been set the task of devising and implementing initiatives which will quickly and significantly reduce road accident rates. In addition, the work of the Scottish Development Department's road safety advisory unit is being reviewed with the aim of subsequently increasing the number of accident black spots investigated on trunk roads.
