HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 c183W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what precautions are taken, in compiling the annual examination statistics, to ensure that pupils passing at CSE grade 1 and O grades A to C in the same subject or pupils passing at O grade A to C or CSE grade 1 in the same subject in examinations organised by different examining boards are not counted as having achieved more than one pass in the subject.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Department's current source of information on the examination achievements of pupils in English schools is the annual school leavers survey which collects details from schools of the CSE and GCE attainments of a 10 per cent. sample of their leavers.

Schools are asked to record the highest grade achieved in each subject, from any examination board, separately for the CSE and GCE examinations. The main presentation of the statistics of CSE/GCE results at higher grades eliminates double counting in those cases where a GCE and CSE result are both obtained in the same subject.
